2022 Best Golf Balls for Beginners

With all of the accessories that accompany the game of golf, few are MUST haves in order to start playing the game. However, one of the accessories not on that list are golf balls. Both balls and golf clubs are the first two things that someone new to golf has to decide on.

Looking through the top brands in golf balls can be intimidating due to the immense amount of options that each brand presents. And not to mention the prices seem to fluctuate quite a lot between brands and specific types of golf balls. Lots of individuals have heard of Titleist Pro V1's and may think that may be the place to start. These golf balls are towards the expensive end of the spectrum and trust me, it hurts just a little bit more when you hit a Pro V1 into the woods off of one of the first tee shots of the day. The aim of this article is to outline some of the characteristics of golf balls that new golfers should look for, and offer some recommendations to help you get started during your first couple rounds of golf.

Golf Ball Characteristics

As was mentioned previously, each brand and make of golf balls comes with its own pros and cons. Understanding what to look for in a golf ball is the first step to ensure that your round of golf gets off to a great start.

Soft vs. Hard

In most cases, both beginner and average golfers should veer towards playing with a softer golf ball, for a multitude of reasons. First off, softer golf balls tend to limit the amount of sidespin added to the ball caused my hooks and slices. Even experienced golfers can relate to slicing a drive and seeing the ball go 30 yards into the woods. A softer golf ball will limit some of the penalties while you are still figuring out and optimizing your golf swing. Additionally, softer golf balls typically offer a lower compression rating than hard golf balls. Meaning that less club speed is required to properly hit a ball. A lower club speed is extremely common in new golfers. Ultimately, a softer golf ball will result in more consistent straight shots while you are still learning the game.

Price

If you search long enough on sites such as Golf Galaxy, you will find tens and hundreds of different options that you can purchase, all with varying price points. Something that I recommend for beginners and experienced golfers alike is to lean towards the cheaper golf balls. Some of the top brands like Callaway, Bridgestone and Titleist provide great performance out on the course even for their "lower-end" golf balls. And trust me when I say this, at the start of your golf journey you will be losing plenty of balls, whether it is in the nearby woods or water around the green. Using the less expensive balls will limit the emotion of hitting a new ball into the nearby lake.

Recommendations

  1. Bridgestone E6 Soft

These are a personal favorite of mine. They seem to offer the perfect balance in performance vs. cost. These balls are geared towards beginners and seem much more forgiving than other balls that I have used in the past. This results in straighter shots and an overall better round.

2. Srixon UltiSoft

This brand of golf balls fall into the medium priced category, however I think these are worth it! One of the softest and lowest compression balls that Srixon makes, this golf ball caters to all swing speeds while limiting the amount of sidespin added from poorly struck shots. These balls perform very similarly to more expensive Srixon golf balls that I have used in the past.

3. Pinnacle Soft

These balls are towards the cheaper end of the spectrum and offer incredible value for what you will have to pay. Built with drag reduction in mind, these golf balls present the opportunity for longer ball flights and really getting the most out of your distance. Some fellow golfers may label these as "cheap," but especially for beginners they present one of the better options available on the market.

In the end, each golfer requires something different from their golf ball. Through simply playing, you begin to learn what ball suits your style best and the specific golf balls that you feel the most confidence with. Ultimately having confidence while standing over a ball and preparing to hit it is one of the most important aspects of golf. My recommendations offer balls that will give you nothing but confidence during the entirety of your round.
